Somehow, when looking for a novel to read, I ended up picking up 日本人の宗教意識 (Nihonjin no Shuukyouishiki - The Consciousness of Religion in the Japanese), by Yuasa Yasuo. This book has the peculiar property of some books where I think I understand most or all of the words at a reasonable level, and yet when they are put together, I have significant trouble grasping the meaning. I suppose I shouldn't be entirely surprised, as I'm reading the Foreword, and the writer is expostulating on how interesting it is that there is no field of study in 'Japanese Philosophy' (日本哲学 - Nihon Tetsugaku), but instead a field 'Study of Japanese Thought Patterns' (日本思想史 - Nihon Shisoushi). I learned a new word, 儒教 (Jukyou), which is Confucianism. ^^;;
