We do not write because we want to; we write because we have to.
- Somerset Maugham
"I write for the same reason I breathe- because if I didn't, I would die."
- Isaac Asimov
The times I stumble across quotes like these are always hard for me. It's hyperbole, but it makes me think: how essential is writing for me? I don't know. I certainly am capable of filling my time without writing, losing myself in reading and video games. Writing isn't the only thing that I want to do. So if to be a writer, it has to be something that's so deep in my very soul that to do without it would kill me, well, I don't think I qualify.
And yet; I was thinking as I lay in bed, trying to fight off my persistent exhaustion, that I never have a day where I don't think of writing. Perhaps that just makes me one of those people that always talks about writing a novel and never actually writes one.
