Maine Coon + Water = Catastrophe [Dec. 2nd, 2008|09:00 am]

The last notable "accident" with our sweet, little disaster was when he tipped a glass half over while we were sleeping and managed to cover the top of our couch's embedded table with a thin glaze of water -- which was nevertheless enough to brick an Xbox 360 controller and make my TV remote... unreliable.

While I usually don't drink water, last night I had a need to be hydrated, so I settled down with my tall glass next to me. Everything went fine until genedefect got home and we settled down to play video games and such -- all of a sudden, Hanabi's "water radar" went off and he started going after my glass. You can try shooing him off, but he'll just come back when you're not paying attention. Despite the handy cup holder present on the table, I ended up with my glass of water tucked between my legs, where he left it alone. Well, for awhile. At one point he got up his courage (or something), and actually tried to drink out of it while it was sitting there. At least he gave up when I dissuaded him.

This morning, the glass was still sitting on the table, but empty. While I was sitting here, I watched as Hanabi walked up to the glass and stuck his nose in. After a couple of tries of that with no success, he knocked the glass over with his paw so it was sitting half-tipped, supported by the cup holder's side. He then tried to get at the tiny bit of water at the bottom from there. No luck. So he nudges it with his paw until the tip of the glass is sitting on the table proper and the back is held up by the cup holder. Aha. Now he gets something, but it's only a few drops. He licks them up then checks the cup again. Finally he knocks it entirely over, plays with it for a couple of minutes, then decides that no, really, he's not going to get anything else out of it, and walks off.

It has never occurred to me that I would ever say this: no cup of water is safe in my house. Hanabi is relentless in pursuit of water, and woe to any piece of electronics anywhere near him when he does.

(He'll also dip his paw in nice and deep when he can and then shake it off, spraying genedefect and I. Aw. How sweet. ^^;;)

I've left a glass of ice on my desk once or twice at night.

It inevitable ends with us waking up in the middle of the night as the youngest cat (Shadow) tips it over to get at the melt-water inside. I think he's taken out a keyboard of mine like that. I learned not to do that any more.
