Weird, weird dream last night.

The fundamental idea was that a girl had been possessed by a demon, or was being haunted by one; something along those lines. However, I wasn't the girl, or, at least, that wasn't my primary perspective. I was reading about her. It was part of a long series, at least nine books, and I was reading one of the later books in the series. I hadn't read any of the earlier ones. Whenever the demon did something to the girl, a strange code was written into the book, which fans had been deciphering.

I know that at some point I remembered more than this... the frustration of dreams.

I can't imagine the sheer amount of effort and sadism it would take to encode a message across multiple books of a series. The closest I ever came was a subtle speech characterization, which I expect no one to notice until I throw it open in a later book... :D

It gets worse. The code was relevant forward and backward - in later books, the code might refer to things that occured in earlier books, and in earlier books it might refer to books that hadn't been written when the book was written.

It's not quite a code, but Steven Erikson is known for including offhand references to things in, say Book One and not explaining them until Book Seven...
