Microsoft has this love-hate relationship with the registry. So much has to be done there. It's one of the foundation stones that the operating system is built on.
But you can't register for changes to the registry using the .NET Class Library, you have to P/Invoke the appropriate unmanaged functions. Nor can you write REG_EXPAND_SZ values.
