How to Kill a Tension Headache [Sep. 24th, 2007|06:42 am]

[Current Mood |relievedrelieved]

My usual approach has been Tylenol + caffeine, or Excedrine Tension Headache (basically the same thing).  Last night, after having the headache on and off for nearly a day, I got some advice.

The tension headache was gone in an hour.  It could have been its time to go, but I wanted to share anyways.

1. Take an NSAID, which is usually ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve).
2. Get a wad of ice, wrap it in a towel, and lie down on top of it, with it underneath your head, near the pain.
3. Lie in the dark and wait.

I've tried #1 and #3 alone, so I think #2 was the kicker.  I wouldn't have thought that using ice on a headache would actually work, but there you go.

Huh, interesting. I find ibuprofen+caffeine quite effective on migraines, but if I ever get a non-migraine headache I'll try the ice.

I get devastating migraines and use a gel pack and the lack of light for them. Can't do the NSAID because of the diabetes, but that's ok, tylenol; is my best friend anyway, so it all works out. ;)

The gel packs are teh best investment I've ever made for my headaches, I swear, and with no wet mess to worry about later, it helps the headache go faster. I get stressed out when there's a mess to clean because of me, ya know? *shrug*

Glad you are better, hope the h/aches stay away for a long time.

Incidently, #2 is also very useful for a hangover.
