If you check the front page of LiveJournal, it looks like they're taking appropriate action to fix what happened. I'm glad that they took responsibility and are re-evaluating their decisions.

Society still frightens me.

I dunno. Between Berkowitz's comments on cNet ("I'd be surprised if it were more than a dozen [journals that got reinstated]") and the general weaselliness of the newspost, especially this paragraph:

"Another issue we needed to deal with was journals that used a thin veneer of fictional or academic interest in events and storylines that include child rape, pedophilia, and similar themes in order to actually promote these activities. While there are stories, essays, and discussions that include discussion of these issues in an effort to understand and prevent them, others use a pretext to promote these activities. It’s often very hard to tell the difference. As such, we intended to have suspend reported journals that do not clearly and substantially object to these a reasonable person would think supported these activities. while at the same time portraying them."

I'm still very skeptical that they're going to reinstate a lot of the porn journals. I'm also deeply, deeply worried by Berkowitz' statement in the cNet article that Six Apart was NOT guided solely by the law, but included considerations of "what kind of community" they want livejournal to be.

The idea of "community standards" always spooks me. Such standards are inevitably arbitrary, and I do worry about what Six Apart will next arbitrarily decide isn't the kind of community they want. Yes, they own the servers and they're within their rights to kick whoever they want off; that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it or stick around for it. I am looking into alternatives to LJ, just in case this turns out not to be the isolated mistake they are claiming.

Meh, if I have to jump ship it would likely be to Live Spaces. Several of my friends are there. Dunno, though, would have to poke around a bit.
