My plans to finish this game as a (relatively) short game before Enchant Arm have come to rather a screeching halt. It's not that the O button doesn't work anymore - I fixed that by blowing $250 on a new PS2 slim (yes, I'm sad) - but rather that I (spoilered) (spoiler) and now the enemies are all powered up.
The problem is, I SUCK at action RPGs, and I think that KH is reaching the edges of my abilities. The normal enemies are beating me senseless (I'm having trouble finishing rooms), and gaining levels in this game just doesn't help THAT much. The boss that I fought in order to (spoiler) (spoiler) pounded me around fifteen to twenty times before I worked out a tactic to beat him. Said tactic consisted of equipping a very heavy Keyblade - more like a club than a blade - and whacking his life down as fast as I could manage. No, there wasn't much finesse, though I did make extensive use of the Glide ability against the cheating attack the boss had. One problem I have with this game is that the bosses are CHEAP.
I'm currently staring at Hollow Bastion with a great deal of very un-Keyblade-wielder fear in my heart, and wondering whether I can even get to the final boss, let alone defeat him when I get there.
Anyone who's played this game who has suggestions on how I can manage this, I'd be much obliged for any advice you might confer upon me.
(Of course, as an entirely different rant, I want my copy of [eM] NOW. It was three days and a week ago that the game was released. I want my copy. A week was painful enough. Waiting another is going to be hard.)
Which kingdom hearts are you playing? If its the first, I could help you.
IF It is the first game, and at the risk of me sounding like an idiot, here is what I have to say: Some of the toughest boss battles have yet to come (Although parasite cage 2 was simply a pain in the ass). Try and get as many points on your chars as possible. although it may not seem like it, leveling does help. You learn extreamly useful abilities later. Have fairy harp equipped, and get the strongest weapons you can for your two other chars. Although this may seem pointless at first, it wont last long. Make sure that when you have just that one party member, to let him do all the fighting. you just use spells, pots, and etc. Then there are a few easy puzzles to solve. and then a realitively easy battle. followed by more puzzles and crap. take the time to level up. when i got stuck, thats what i would do, so eventually no matter how bad i was at a fight, my seer power advantage completely destroys the enemy or boss.
It's the first game, but the Final Mix version.
I think you're right about the levelling - I only accumulated three levels and refreshed my fighting ability, and I appear to have actually managed to get past where I was relatively easily.
Glide, Dodge Roll, and Aero are your friends. So is Heal + MP Rage. I didn't find most of the attack magic in KH1 to be all that useful, so you're much better off conserving MP for Cure/Aero. Then the special attack skills like Last Arcanum, which are nice if only because you're not taking damage when you do them.
I believe that Final Mix gives you Leaf Veil (ability which makes you not take damage when trying to heal yourself), which is damn nice on some of the harder bosses. I wound up finishing the game without it because the skill progression I had made it unavailable until like level 80 or something. You might have it earlier depending on what progression you picked.
Weapon-wise, I generally used one of the ones with a longer reach, like Metal Chocobo. As with KH2, the weapon stats vary by only a couple of points and you can probably get away with using just whichever one you like the look of.
There's a couple of notes on the (bloody long) final boss encounter in my game journal, though it's kinda spoiler-ful, but if you get there and have problems feel free to look it up (archived in Memories).
I don't remember having that much trouble with KH (and I am full of suck at action games too), are you playing on Hard Mode?
Aero seems awfully expensive for what it does. Is it really worth it? I've been using MP Rage and MP Haste, which is nice.
I have Leaf Veil, and yes, it saved me when I was fighting the boss I just beat.
Actually, I was using the MP + 2 weapon, but using the Power of Hero blade made all the difference in the last fight I played (+6 Atk).
Thanks, I will.
No, just Final Mix mode.
Er, Damage Aspir and MP Haste - I'm not sure what MP Rage is.
Aero's really nice depending on the situation. Aeroga will block most projectiles, for instance, which is invaluable against certain bosses.
I recall sticking with Power of Hero for quite awhile too. The major issue is that offenseive magic just doesn't really do enough so unless you're needing the MP for heals phys attack is probably more important. I don't recall if he did it in 1 but Donald could heal you in 2 with his magic.
MP Rage is the official translation for Damage Aspir I think. Eventually if you equip enough of them you get back more MP than you'd ever need to heal yourself with.
