Oh, and Jack Thompson scares me.

Not me. His allies are all jumping ship -- first Clinton, then NIMF -- and he has never actually won an anti-videogame case. He's just a loud, obnoxious, toothless old coot.

Oh, he doesn't scare me because of what he could do. He scares me in the way you're wary about people who aren't acting rationally. The guy appears to have lost all connection with reality.

I've been following the saga of him sending cease and desist letters to various websites that talk about him, then when the website owners reply, claiming that they are sending unsolicited emails to him. I wasn't aware of the past things which blow him over the edge from "possibly just unhinged from the all out attack he's been under from gamers" to "okay, this guy is living in a different world."

I mean, yes, there's limited evidence that violent media -- television, video games, what have you -- cause a temporary reduction in inhibitions against violence, but there's no evidence that they increase tendencies to spontaneous violence or that there are any long-term effects, nor is there any evidence that the interactivity of video games has any additional effect.
But when it comes down to it, I don't think that has any bearing on Jack Thompson's crusade (and I use that term to imply all its connotations); it is purely and simply a generational thing. Jacko doesn't like the growing unfamiliarity of the world that used to be his, and is now rapidly becoming ours. He hates youth because it represents change, and has latched onto the greatest difference between youth today and his own youth, videogames, as a convenient target.

The man's CPU is in dire need of some hardcore cooling.
