So, I finished Tales of Destiny. It was more or less a decent game, though the final pieces got a little plot-coupon-ish, and the fighting system was frustrating. It wasn't so much badly designed as not functional on the system -- while the pausing for magic effects was irritating, it was understandable, but I had a lot of difficulty controlling the main character's movement and using the techniques I wanted to.
The crowning touch to my frustration was the fact that I had to fight the last battle three times. The game glitched twice, apparently on the Majinken skill's sound file. Partway through the battle, when I was pummeling the final boss with Majinkens to stop him from casting, it would suddenly start repeating "Majinmajinmajinmajinmajinmajin..." as if it kept trying to load the file and failing. The battle continued just fine -- it didn't freeze -- but at the end it would fail to load the next plot sequence. The third time, sensing a pattern, I de-equipped Majinken and made do with a different skill, which actually worked much better. I ate through the final boss's two forms in no time and was granted the privilege of seeing the (somewhat short) ending sequence.
I'm not playing another PS game for awhile, though. Backwards compatibility, yeah right. Image glitching I could understand, but game crashing is seriously bad juju.
I felt like I should finish off .hack//Mutation or restart Growlanser III, but I had just finished a TRPG and ARPG, so I decided to play Shadow Hearts for a traditional style, instead. It's entertaining, and I love the characters (who couldn't love a group of characters that mock a boss into a frenzy?). The only problem is that the language is fairly difficult, but there are transcripts online and I'm using them to help decipher some of the more gnarly kanji-compounds.
