I've decided it's time to start sucking down the orange juice. Apparently the scientific community is still out to judgement on whether it's effective against colds or not, but it can't hurt, right?

Although you can technically get Vitamin C poisioning, I believe you need to consume something on the order of 200x the RDA to get it - I know I've been fine at concentrations of 20x in my system.

Yeah, I've heard of that... but I strongly doubt it's possible to do so on orange juice. I think my system would start protesting against it before it became a problem. My memories seem to indicate that the study that dealt with this mentioned use of dietary additives to do it.

Yes, the study did say that the cases of posioning did all involve the use of supplements. And since a serving of OJ is 8oz, unless you can handle 12. 5 gallons in your system, I'd wager that you're right that your system would start protesting long before it became a problem.

I'm not even sure my body size, in toto, minus bones and essential organs, has enough volume to pack 12.5 gallons in. ^^

If I was at work I could look it up. But, basically you're right. C is a water-soluble vitamin, so for the most part any extra you ingest will be.... eliminated naturally. You'd have to eat something like an entire bottle of C pills at once to hit toxicity.

Ah, orange juice, how I miss thee... wonderful stuff, but induces such pain...

...Well, vitamin C is vital to immune system functioning. So, if you're not getting enough normally, getting more than usual ought to help... but if you are getting enough normally, I'm not sure.

I doubt I'm getting suitable quantities, unfortunately. I don't eat nearly as balanced meals as I should.

My professional opinion (dear God, I've been working this stupid job too long, I have a professional opinion) is that 2000 mg or so of C is a good amount to help boost your immune system. You want to take it in gradually throughout the day so that your system doesn't try to flush it. C can cause issues in higher doses, but tends to require at least 3500-4000 mg before anything happens, and the first thing then is basically just a messy trip to the bathroom as your system says no.

You may also want to try adding zinc (approx. 30 mg), vitamin E (400-1000 IU), and selenium (200-400 mcg).
